Call of Duty: Black Ops Teaser Trailer Hits Web
The first trailer for Call of Duty: Black Ops aired last night on GTTV with Geoff Keighley giving gamers a tantalising glimpse of what to expect come November 9.
The teaser is from the point of view of a captured soldier undergoing torture, apparently having flashbacks of previous missions as he copes with the pain. We are shown a laboratory area with some pliers and other medical instruments visible on a side table – presumably we are looking at the torture room – and a series of brief gameplay snippets flash on screen intermittently like shattered memories.
While its hard to pick out too many solid details, several locations and figures appear clearly visible. A soldier in jungle face paint, a parachute descent into a forest and a ground war of troops and vehicles on an earthy plain are shown in some of the lengthier sequences, while iconic images drawing heavily from Apocalypse Now that show US Army helicopters and hovercraft entering the combat zone plus two Vietcong soldiers posing in their clearly identifiable headwear indicate the Vietnam war will, as speculated, be a primary location for the game. This setting should give fans some indication of the range of weapons to expect in the final release. I spotted only a camouflaged AUG H-BAR in the trailer but players can certainly expect the American M-16 to make a prominent appearance.
Confirming the return of vehicle segments, one sequence clearly shows the player piloting a gunship above the forest canopy while peppering combatants on a rope bridge with rockets. The trailer also features a pilot standing on a runway in a space suit beside an advanced, high altitude jet, later shown flying in the outer limits of Earth’s atmosphere. In keeping with the Black Ops theme, stealth sections were hinted at and, judging by screenshots from the trailer, players might be able to assassinate enemies from behind.
The trailers released for Modern Warfare 2 threw up a few interesting surprises last year so we can certainly expect some big revelations in the coming months. I’ll be covering them here when they hit the web so remember to check back regularly for the breakdowns.
